Re: Hey, most of you know Ben...

I worked under the table for years. That's what nannies do. People don't want to pay you a fair salary AND pay the gov't your workman's comp, unemployment, taxes, provide vacation time, sick time and medical benefits, etc. all out of their take-home pay. I tried filing as self employed once and we owed over $300 despite everything DH had paid in and the fact that I'd only made $2000 (employed at end of year). Nice.
I don't get why everyone is all up in arms that people don't want to become citizens. So what? You think there aren't American's out there who buy homes and get jobs in other countries and yet remain American? Stop and think about every celebrity you hear of these days. They all own homes all over the place. BFD. People leave their birth country for a variety of reasons and it's their business. Very few people end up in this country simply because it was their lifelong dream to become an American citizen.
In an ideal world getting a green card would be easy and free. You'd show up at some government office, give them a set of fingerprints so they could run an international background check, pose for a DMV quality ID card and away you go. Go get a job. Go pay taxes. Go shop at WalMart. Welcome to America and have a nice day. It doesn't work like that. It costs *thousands* of dollars to get a green card. It takes months, if not years. There are only so many allotted, period.
So what do the rest of the people do? The ones who can't save up a couple grand or can't live off savings for a year or just plain get there too late? They go out and get a job where they don't need an official ID to get one. They get paid in cash where taxes are not taken out. They still have to buy food at the local grocery store. They still have to pay rent, utilities, keep shoes on their kids. Every now and then they might even go to Burger King or rent a movie at Blockbuster. What money they send "home", if any at all, is nothing compared to what they are spending for the "privilege" of barely scraping by in this "land of the free".
I agree that illegal immigration sucks! It sucks that employers can get away with hiring people and paying them in room and board. It sucks that they can hire people and pay them $3 per hour cash. It sucks that people have no medical coverage and are too scared to report crime.
I personally couldn't care less. You want to do something about the economy in this country - end welfare abuse and outsourcing!
Okay, rant over. Too bad I've forgotten all about my own blog or I wouldn't have had to freak all over yours. LOL. PS - It kicks ass that your kids have dual citizenship. How cool for them!!
